In Meiji Jingu Gyoen, there is a long iris garden stretching along the
walking path, where visitors can leisurely stroll while admiring the flower
up close.
Meiji Jingu Gyoen is famous for azaleas and autum foliage, but the iris
garden has a distinct charm, marking the arrival of the summer season.
"Iris Garden"
This iris garden was established around 1897 by imperial decree from Emperor
Meiji, gathering and planting high-quality varieties. Originally, there
were over 80 species, but today the garden boasts 150 species and 1500
large iris plants. The breathtaking scnery of irises blooming in a lush
valley is complemented by its excellent natural surroundings.
There are three main types of irises.
"Edo","Ise",and "Higo(Kumamoto)"and the irises
in this garden belong to the "Edo variety". Their blooming season
typcally lasts fron "early June to early July"
明治神宮御苑には散歩道に沿って長く造られた菖蒲田があり、近くに花菖蒲を観賞しながらゆっくりと散策が出来る。
明治神宮御苑ではつつじ、紅葉などでも有名であるが、この花菖蒲田は趣があり、夏を迎える季節になったことを感じさせる。
菖蒲田
この菖蒲田は明治三十年頃 明治天皇の御思召により優秀な品種を集め植えられたもので、当時は八十余種でしたが、現在では百五十種・大株一千五百株を数え、緑の谷間に咲き競う景観は環境のよさと共に実に見事です。
花菖蒲には江戸（東京）種、伊勢種、肥後（熊本）種の三系統がありますが、ここの花菖蒲は江戸種です。花期は例年６月上旬から七月上旬です。（苑内掲示より）
