This garden was originally the estate garden of Kato and Ii families, feudal lords in the early Edo period. In the early Meiji era, it became an imperial property and under Emperor Meiji's wishes, various modifications were made. Empress Dowager Shoken visited the garden freiquently,makine it a historically significant place.

Covering an area of appoximately 83000 square meters (about 25,000 tsubo), the garden retains the unique characteristics of Musashino. Within its grounds are notable spots sucj as Kakumontei, Otsuridai, Shianan Pond , the iris garden, and Kiyosams's Well. The scenery is enchanting throughout the seasons, but the beauty of the iris flowers, cherished by the enshrined deity, is particularly exceptional in June.

明治神宮御苑は明治神宮の中にあり明治天皇、昭憲皇太后が良く訪れた御苑で、大鳥居をくぐってすぐ左手にある北門入口より入る。

御苑の中でも清正井戸だけはパワースポットとして人気があり順番待ちになっている。この清正井戸の湧水は花菖蒲田に流れ込み南池につながり、南池よりＪＲの線路をくぐって竹下通りへ、竹下通りよりブラームスの小径・モーツアルト通りを経て明治通りをくぐって現在キャットストリートや遊歩道になっている渋谷川に流れ込んでいる。

この御苑は江戸時代の初めから大名加藤家、井伊家の下屋敷の庭園でありましたが、明治初年皇室のご料地となり、明治天皇の思召により所々模様替えがなされ、昭憲皇太后にはたびたび行啓になられた由緒深い名苑であります。
面積は約８３，０００平方メートル（二万五千坪余）で武蔵野特有の面影を残した苑内には、隔雲亭、御釣台、四阿南池、菖蒲田、清正井などがあり、四季折々の眺めは誠に趣があり、殊に六月に咲き競う御祭神ご遺愛の花菖蒲の美しさは格別です。
