Marunouchi, one of Japan’s premier business districts, features an intricate network of underground passages that shelters people from the sweltering summer heat and the freezing winter winds?making it a waste not to use them. These underground walkways are particularly useful for escaping hazards above ground, such as massive fires or falling volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount Fuji. Major buildings in the area are equipped with large water tanks, as well as cafeterias stocked with food supplies. However, because most of these subterranean passages are situated at a shallow depth, they are not suitable for shelter in events such as nuclear warfare. In those situations, taking refuge in the deep basements of large skyscrapers is advisable.
