「天神信仰」とは、神さまとして崇められた菅原道真の神霊に対する信仰。 菅原道真：寛平九年(897)に醍醐天皇が即位し、道真の信任あつく、左大臣藤原時平と並んで右大臣兼右近衛大将に任ぜられたが、時平の中傷によって太宰権帥に左遷された。太宰府に行く際に、東風（こち）吹かば匂いおこせよ梅の花あるじなしとて春な忘れそ、の歌の中の梅の木が道真を慕って一夜のうちに太宰府に飛来したと伝えられる”飛梅伝説”（とびうめでんせつ）がある。
