旧三井財閥の発祥となった越後屋より発展した三越。越後屋は当時珍しい「現金掛け値なし」「当時の呉服店が大名・金持ちを顧客としていたのに対し一般庶民を顧客の中心とした」「御客を訪問して掛け売り販売するのではなく、お店に来てもらう”店前売”を行った」「一般庶民でも大切な御客としてお茶を出すなどおもてなしをした」「当時は１着分の一反単位で売ることが当然と思われていたが、顧客の必要とする長さで切り売りした」「販売品目を顧客に広めるビラの作成を日本で最初に行った」「売れ残り品は仕入れ値を切って売り切りを行った」などで庶民の支持を得て急速に売り上げを伸ばし、現在の基盤を築いたと言われている。

三越を発祥の原点とする「三井財閥」は、その後日本の各産業に大きな足跡を残し、日本最大のグループになった。この為、三越は優良顧客を多数抱える高級百貨店となり、現在に至るまでそのつながりを残している。これが「三越の外商」として、知る人ぞ知る大きな存在になっている理由になる。

The Mitsui Zaibatsu, which originated from Mitsukoshi, has since left a large mark on various industries in Japan and become the largest group in Japan. As a result. Mitsukoshi has become a high-end department store with many loyal customers, and has maintained that connection to the present day. This is why it has become a major presence known only to those rich of riches, as Mitsukoshi's home visiting sales.
