仲見世通りでは着物、和風の着物飾りなど日本的なみやげものが多いが、雷おこし、おせんべい、団子、人形焼、饅頭などを売っているお店も多い。

江戸時代には参道の両脇には浅草寺の支院があり、その軒先にお店が並んだのが仲見世の始まりになる。

Japanese souvenirs that foreigners buy include folding fans, ornaments for bags, ornaments of lucky cats that are said to bring good fortune, wallets made from Japanese clothing fabric, T-shirts with "I LOVE JAPN" or "SAMURAI" written in large kanji, soft and small Hello Kitty dolls are very popular, and key chains with pictures of Mt.Fuji are all priced just under 1,000 yen.

During the Edo period, there were branch temples of Sensoji Temple on both sides of the approach, and Nakamise began when shops were lined up in front of the eaves.
